Lincoln School Cubby House Project boosts support for regional breast cancer

students in cubby house

A joint project between Lincoln School, TAFE Western and Juvenile Justice NSW is helping to provide an opportunity to raise vital funds for the local Pink Angels in Dubbo.

The Pink Angels' mission is to care, help and support local breast cancer patients across the region in areas including Dubbo, Narromine, Trangie, Warren, Nevertire, Nyngan, Wellington, Cobar, Brewarrina, Bourke, Lightning Ridge, Coonamble, Gilgandra and Gulargambone.

The project involves the construction of a cubby house by students at Lincoln School within the Orana Juvenile Justice Centre. The cubby house will then be raffled with all monies raised supporting the activities of the Pink Angels.

Lincoln School students building the cubby house are working towards a TAFE Certificate 1 in Construction and the Record of School Achievement.

Educational programs being undertaken by detainees are an important part of their rehabilitation and can lead to employment opportunities when they are released from custody.

The project simulates a work environment with elements including working safely in the construction industry, basic construction, estimation and costing, handling and storage of materials and application of WHS requirements, policies and procedures. Students were also involved in all aspects of design including the floor plan, selection of materials and the colour scheme.

Most of the young men at Orana come from severely disadvantaged backgrounds and yet they have shown commitment in bettering themselves by taking part in the project and supporting the local Pink Angels.
